NHS rolls out discreet home cervical testing kits for millions of women

NHS England has begun rolling out home HPV self-testing kits to nearly four million women aged 30 to 65 who are overdue for cervical screening, as part of its ambition to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040. The invitation-only initiative offers a discreet and convenient alternative for those who have not responded to previous screening invitations, allowing individuals to collect a vaginal sample at home and return it for high-risk HPV testing. Those with a positive HPV result will be invited for follow-up cervical screening to assess for cervical cell changes. The programme follows encouraging results from the YouScreen trial, which demonstrated that self-sampling can significantly increase participation among under-screened populations. While clinician-collected cervical screening remains the gold standard, self-testing is expected to help reduce barriers to participation and improve screening coverage across England.
