In Loving Memory of Dr Louise Smart

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Louise Smart—a deeply respected cytopathologist, mentor, colleague, and friend.

Dr Smart served as a Consultant Cytopathologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and held numerous influential roles, including a founder BAC Executive member, RCPath Part 2 Cytology Lead, member of the RCPath Cytopathology subcommittee, and Associate Editor for Cytopathology. Through these positions, she demonstrated an unwavering passion for the profession and played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of countless cytoscreeners, trainees, scientists, and pathologists—ultimately improving the lives of many patients.

Beyond her professional achievements, Louise was a kind, generous, and truly wonderful person. Her warmth, sharp intellect, and brilliant sense of humour made her a joy to work with and a cherished presence in any room. She inspired those around her not only through her expertise but also through her humanity.

Dr Louise Smart leaves behind a legacy of excellence, compassion, and quiet brilliance. She will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
