In this talk an overview will be given of current status and advancements in AI in cytology. The talk will also consider future applications of AI in cytology as well as how computational cytopathology will be implemented in daily diagnostic practice.


Dr Jan Lukas Robertus received his MD at the University of Utrecht. He completed his PhD in molecular biology and trained as a pathologist at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He previously worked as a Consultant Cardiothoracic and Transplant Pathologist at the Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiothoracic and Transplant Pathologist at The Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals as part of Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust in February 2015. Dr Robertus has been a Topol NHS Fellow and is clinical lead for cellular pathology and the lead pathologist for computational pathology.

He is Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London and works two days a week at the National Heart and Lung Institute. His main research interests are computational pathology and AI in healthcare, with a focus on thoracic oncology. He currently holds an Asthma and Lung UK project grant and previously a CRUK early detection Innovation award and HNCDI Programme grant.
